Bonsai Natal Plum
Carissa grandiflora
Carissa grandiflora is a thorny, evergreen shrub from South Africa that pulls off a rare trick: it can flower and fruit simultaneously, giving you fragrant white star-shaped blossoms and red plum-like fruit on the same branch at the same time. As a bonsai, it is well-suited to beginners — it's drought-tolerant, buds back readily after pruning, and forgives occasional neglect. Just be aware that the spines are serious and most plant parts are toxic, so it earns its keep best in homes without small children or free-roaming pets.
